There are currently plenty of books on the market related to wellness. What was it that made you feel so excited about spreading the word and getting your book published about the topic you wanted to write about in your book? Simply put, there are no other Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) books on the market—at least not one that can be grasped by the average user, or that does not teach them anything they don't already know. The overwhelming feedback I got from people on the Internet when I originally posted about it in March of 2012 was my inspiration for writing this novel. It's a fairly common disease, it turns out, but many people (and doctors) don't know what it is. Visiting multiple doctors and being advised that you have "acne," or being subjected to butchering surgery, is very standard. According to the doctors, there is no HS treatment. People suffer tremendously from it—in fact, HS is regarded as one of the world's most painful conditions. I've also got letters from HS doctors and nurses, thanking me for asking them what they have—and for giving them hope. However, the key driving force for writing this book was an email I got from a 12-year-old girl who said that because of the pain she was in, she was going to kill herself. I wrote back to her immediately, but I never heard from her again. I feel desperate to know that she's all right. I don't want someone else to go through what I did as a teenager—on more than one occasion, I was thinking of suicide myself. I've had lots of letters from people who have since said they want to kill themselves. All of them have touched me profoundly, but the 12-year-old girl is never far from my thoughts. HS is difficult to diagnose, and its presence is not even known to many physicians. How were you diagnosed? Since I was 13 years old, I have had HS, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my mid-30s. I've seen more than forty doctors from four different countries up to then, none of whom could tell me what's wrong with me. In a book about PCOS (also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, which I also had), I eventually found the name 'Hidradenitis suppurativa' and could finally put a name to the terrible disease I had endured for so long.
