This book is an introduction to a world in computer programming that uses Python and other libraries to do computation, the books is written for students who are computer programmers and students who have little or no previous programming experience. It plants students with the skills that will allow them to make effective use of computational techniques, including some of the tools and techniques of data science for using computation to model and analyse data. This latest version has been revised for Python 3, restructured to make it easy to use in classes that discuss only a subset of this book's content and provides additional material, including five new chapters.

Students are exposed to Python and the fundamentals of programming in the sense of such computational principles and techniques as exhaustive enumeration, bisection search and effective approximation algorithms. While it addresses such typical subjects as numerical complexity and basic algorithms, the book focuses on a broad variety of topics not present in other introductory texts, including knowledge analysis, simulations to model randomness, computational methods to explain data and mathematical techniques that inform (and misinform) as well as two related but comparatively specialised topics: optimization problems and dynamic programming.
