Description: This is a popular review resource for students who must master pharmacology for curriculum and certification examinations. It is especially popular with visual learners. 

Purpose: There is no preface, but the book is designed to aid visual learners in the mastery of pharmacology; the illustrations are superb.

Audience: The book is targeted at medical students, but would just as easily suffice for pharmacy, nursing, and other health professional students who must master the subject of pharmacology for their curriculum and certification examinations.

Features: Chapters cover all of the topics found in a traditional pharmacology textbook; eight of the 48 chapters are new. What makes this book a standout among others on pharmacology is its carefully and cleverly designed figures and tables. Each chapter provides an overview, important clinical background information, and a discussion of the important drugs. The extensive database that must be mastered in pharmacology is made accessible by the well-designed figures and tables presented in such a clever way that facilitates learning and retention. What is lacking is the evidence required for students to cultivate an evidence-based knowledge of the subject. Each chapter has a series of study questions, formatted with an enclosed cover-up card so that students can easily refer to the feedback information once they have made their choice. Although the questions are good study questions, many are not in the format found on most certification examinations.

Assessment: The survival of this pharmacology review resource through six editions (first edition, 1992) attests to its popularity with students. This book is often preferred over many other pharmacology resources by visual learners. However, many teachers find the book somewhat oversimplified. I would say that it is an excellent resource for the mastery of pharmacology but would encourage students to prepare for the USMLE examination to access additional question bank files prior to sitting for the examination.
